I’m not sure I want them to know how I feel or what I think. After all, what will they think of me?

What Will They Think Of Me…?
It’s one of the most powerful questions you can ask yourself. It can paralyse you with fear of judgement and stop you from saying the very things that you need to, to give yourself a chance of healing.
And let’s be honest about it, we live in a society in which mental health issues are still taboo, even if we’re talking about them more than ever before. And there may be some who judge others for this particular health problem. But here’s the thing: How often do we ask ourselves the question: Do I have to accept their judgement?
We have become so accustomed to living with the judgement of others that the idea that we don’t have to accept it doesn’t even appear on our radar. And yet it is so damaging to our self-worth, our sense of our innate value as human beings.
So it’s understandable that we ask that question but the thing is it’s the wrong question! The right question is What do I think of myself?
If we start asking that question instead, we open our hearts & minds to the possibility of healing, recovery & love of oneself; Love in the sense that we have an innate & irreducible value simply for being.
If you find yourself struggling with your mental health and feel reluctant to reach out for help for fear of what others will think of you, then that tells us something about how you value yourself & your health. If the opinions of others matter more to you than your health, that tells me that your self-worth isn’t what it could be. Frankly, you deserve more!

So whether it’s depression, anxiety, a phobia, an eating disorder, a need to assert yourself more, help with grief & loss, substance use & addiction, self-harm, self-improvement, or any mental health issue, counselling is for you.
It’s just a matter of recognising that you deserve the care and reaching out to find it.
Finding the right counsellor for you is going to be important. Having a good professional relationship with a counsellor makes a world of difference so get in touch with a few & talk to them before you book a session so you can get a feel for whether or not they are someone you can work well with.
