How Do You Do It?

There are presents to buy for the family with big hopes.

You might be feeling your years when trying to climb into the attic for a box of decorations and then try to find some replacement bulbs for a set of Christmas Tree lights made in 1986.

There may be a demanding partner who has a fantastic vision you’re expected to meet with a few tired pieces of tinsel or expecting a Christmas dinner that would grace the table of a Michelin star restaurant.

Easy to see, then, how your own wellbeing may have slipped from your mind. In all the excitement & stress, let’s take a moment to think about you & your well being.

The ‘5 Ways to Well Being’ are recognised the world over. We just need to adapt them to the circumstances we find ourselves in. Those steps are as follows:

1. Connect: It has never been easier to stay in touch with the people around us & those we love. Use those connections. You, your community, your family & your friends are all part of your support network. Be there for each other. Support each other through this difficult time. So whether picking up the phone, video-calling, texting, email or smoke signals are your thing.. stay in touch.

2. Be Active: This doesn’t have to involve sweating it out in the gym or running mile after mile. There are plenty of things you can try at home from online PT classes, fitness DVD’s and books as well as putting your back into the chores around the house. The trick is to do what you can, when you can. We all need rest but there’s a balance to be struck. Too much exercise or rest does us no favours. Don’t get stuck on the couch. Keep moving. Rest when you need to.

3. Be Mindful: Give yourself more time to experience the moment you are in, the environment around you, your thoughts, feelings and physical sensations.

4. Education: It’s never too late! You are never to old to learn something new. Education is about learning and that’s something we can all do every day. It doesn’t have to be formal education. It can be something you do at home. So, don’t wait for it to happen. Supercharge your experience of life by learning something new: A new recipe, a new skill like growing vegetables, reading that book you’ve had your eye on for months or if you really want to go for it, sign up for a course.

5. Give: Kindness is infectious. Helping out others not only benefits them but it can be very rewarding personally. Additionally, when we act kindly, others are more likely to follow suit. Giving doesn’t have to involve parting with your hard earned money. It can be giving your time or effort, a thoughtful act – Even saying good morning to a stranger. It all counts. So, don’t wait for someone to be kind to you. Start the ball rolling yourself. Don’t just follow trends… set them!
